Moving to a new city can be daunting. Whether you’re headed there for work or to start university, the chances are that you’re feeling nervous. After all, you’re leaving behind your friends, family, and everything you know about where you live. The good news, though, is that relocating can be great fun, giving you a chance to start fresh, make new friends, and broaden your horizons. Below, we’ve rounded up some advice to help you get to grips with your new home. Be sure to try them out; you’ll feel like you’ve been living there for years!
Pretend you’re a tourist for the day
One of the best ways to truly immerse yourself into a city is to pretend you’re a tourist for the day. Rock up first thing on a morning and use Google to find the most popular attractions like parks, museums, and walks. Ask questions as you go, and you’ll soon feel like you’re part of the city. The best part? Once you’re done, you can head to your new local for a pint or two!
Take to your neighbourhood on foot
We recommend leaving the car at home and exploring your new neighbourhood on foot. Go for a walk around the streets and look out for your nearest pharmacy, convenience store and takeaway - they’ll all come in useful once you get settled. Now is also a great time to say hi to your new neighbours. Peak over their garden fence to say hello or wait until they’re out and about. You’ll make a new friend who can keep an eye on your house when you’re out.
Explore with a colleague or classmate
If you’re moving into student accommodation, buddy up with one of your classmates and explore the city together. You’ll feel more comfortable if you’ve got someone to tag along with you and you can get to know each other at the same time. Moving to a new city can be lonely, but once you’ve made a few connections, you’ll feel much more relaxed and at home.
Ask for recommendations online
Love sushi? Missing swimming? Need a new pair of trainers? Ask for recommendations online from locals; either via your university community page or by joining a Facebook group. Having a resource like this will make it much easier to settle in, as you’ll keep yourself busy and find local communities that share the same interests as you. Just be cautious if you’re planning to meet up with someone offline - always choose a public space for an introduction!
Eat out - a lot!
Finally, set aside a small budget to eat out when you first get to your new city. Not only is it easier when you’re still unpacking, but it gives you a chance to see different parts of your new city, identify the best places to eat, and meet people. If you’re confident enough, chat with the waitress, the bartender, and fellow diners - that way, you’ll soon make lots of new friends who’ll keep you busy. Socially awkward? Eating in local restaurants alone will boost your confidence and ensure you’re not stuck in your bedroom when you’re not at work.
